In OT, sensory processing is a core concept—especially for children or adults with sensory processing difficulties that impact daily life. Sensory information is taken in through the 5 traditional sense: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste, however, there are 3 additional senses important for processing including vestibular - sense of balance and movement (inner ear); proprioception - awareness of body position and movement (joints and muscles); and interoception - awareness of internal body states (hunger, pain, temperature, etc.).
